From Parks To Pavilions
With a number of South Asian heritage players like Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid, Haseeb Hameed, now playing in the highest levels of English cricket the From Parks to Pavilions project explores the development of Asian cricket in Yorkshire, and around Britain. Working with young people we have interviewed over 30 cricket players, administrators and enthusiasts in West Yorkshire to understand how Asian cricket has developed from people playing in the back streets, alleyways and parks to playing for teams and clubs; from developing the Quaid-e Azam Sunday Cricket League to ultimately playing for counties and for country. We are now ready to release our short documentaries.
These documentaries help shine a light on wider issues of Asian migration to Britain; being ‘Bussed Out’; Yorkshire’s ‘Birth-Right’ policy; ‘Paki-Bashing’; acceptance, and cultural understanding/insensitivities. Who would have thought so much would come out of a small cricket heritage project. We hope this project helps give these under-represented voices an opportunity to add to the knowledge of social and sporting history in their own words and on their terms.
Our exhibition of photographs of ‘backstreet’ and ‘alleyway’ cricket by Mohanlal Mistry has been to over a dozen locations, including Headingley Cricket Ground, the Oval, Bradford Libraries, Dewsbury Library and Lightwaves in Wakefield. It has been viewed by over 30,000 people.
